The Al Larvick Conservation Fund (ALCF, or “The Fund”) operates a grant program for the conservation of home and amateur audiovisual materials (moving image: analog film and video only) and their digital capture. Grants are open to individuals, institutions and organizations. The program currently makes awards under the two separate categories outlined below. Grants are open for submission year around.

The national grant is awarded on an annual basis. The application deadline each year are June 1st. The regional grant is given on a biennial basis. The application deadline is December 1st every other year. The next regional grant will be awarded in 2025.

Any application submitted after these respective deadlines will be considered for the following grant cycle. Award recipients are contacted individually and then announced via Newsletter, Facebook and other advertising.

Al Larvick regional Grant (ALRG)

Through the Al Larvick Regional Grant (formerly the Al Larvick North Dakota Grant), the Fund offers a budget total of up tp $5,000 by a sponsoring state of the art film and video lab, to one or more applicants. Grant money is to be applied to the preservation of cultural histories through the conservation, education and public accessibility of home and amateur analog audiovisual materials. This grant is limited to collections reflecting life in the upper midwest states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. The Fund accommodates most analog (pre-digital) audiovisual media formats. This grant is financially supported by its sponsor, The MediaPreserve and Al Larvick Conservation Fund's individual donors. Al Larvick National Grant (ALNG)

Through the Al Larvick National Grant, the Fund offers a budget total of up to $5,000 by a sponsoring state of the art film and video labs, to one or more applicants. Grant money is to be applied to the preservation of cultural histories through conservation, education and the public accessibility of home and amateur analog audiovisual materials. This grant is limited to works recorded within the United States and primarily outside of North Dakota State (recordings captured primarily in North Dakota are covered in the ALNDG). The fund tries to accommodate most analog (pre-digital) media formats. This grant is financially supported by its sponsor, Pro8mm and Al Larvick Conservation Fund individual donors. Funds may be APPLIED TO:

  • Evaluation of original materials

  • Repair and cleaning of original materials as appropriate

  • Capture resolution of High Definition, 2k & up (dependent upon sponsor)

  • Color correction (dependent upon sponsor)

  • Return original materials and packaging (boxes, cases, canisters, reels, etc.)

  • One drive (Mac/PC formatted)

  • Digitally transferred files including a digital master and digital access files (SD captures to not include access files. Only digital master files)

  • Shipping costs to and from lab via FedEx.

Grantees will receive a ALCF Personal Archiving Best Practices Guide for reference.
